Each day we strive to improve the health and well-being of people across Chicago and beyond. We strive to reduce differences in outcomes related to race, ethnicity, income, and geography. At SUHI, you can contribute to meaningful change through innovative research and community health interventions.
Since social epidemiologist Steve Whitman founded SUHI in 2000, we’ve worked to document and address health challenges with robust data. Our goal is not only to understand but to transform. From our work spearheading the Sinai Community Health Surveys to our efforts addressing disparities in asthma, diabetes and cancer, our achievements over the past 25 years illustrate this commitment to improving lives. You can become part of the storied SUHI tradition.
Health is about more than health care; an estimated 80% of modifiable contributors to health outcomes are tied to social, economic, environmental, and policy-related influences. We study these factors, while prioritizing the needs and voices of individuals and families. Behind every data point is a real person.
Located in the Lawndale community of Chicago, SUHI keeps community at the heart of everything we do. We depend on the strengths and insights of our community to improve health outcomes; through long-term partnerships, participatory research, and genuine community engagement, we effectively serve local communities in Chicago and across the country.
We rely on each other for continued success. Our shared commitment to improving community health fosters a strong sense of purpose and a supportive environment where everyone is willing to lend a hand. We value teamwork while giving individuals autonomy and flexibility.
Learning is a priority at SUHI so we can grow as individuals and contribute more effectively to our mission. We offer many opportunities for professional development and training for our team and our partners. Honoring our commitment to learning, in 2017, we founded the Center for CHW Research, Outcomes, and Workforce Development (CROWD) to support health systems, community-based organizations, health plans, and research studies, and assist in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating CHWs. SUHI invests in future public health leaders through trainings, internship, fellowships, and webinars.
